Speaker: Dr. Juhanna Rogers

Dr. Juhanna Rogers is a motivational speaker, commentator, artist, and education activist committed to social justice, education, and the arts. As a critical race scholar, she builds platforms for critical conversations on race, justice, and equity. Dr. Rogers has worked nationally and internationally to help address equity in higher education, exploring ways through which underrepresented populations— specifically people of African descent— can improve their lives and communities. Her passion lies in bringing out narratives of the people she has met along the way, using their stories as tools for empowering students in urban communities, including within her role as host of the WCNY/PBS series “Behind the Woman” and founder and contributor to the “4Mics” podcast out of her hometown of Newark, New Jersey.

In 2017, Dr. Rogers joined CenterState CEO, an economic development strategist and chamber of commerce located in Syracuse, NY. Her roles evolved from Director of Performance to Director of Community Engagement & Empowerment for the Economic Inclusion team, where she developed

communication and engagement activities and strategies to drive change. In her current position as Vice President of Racial Equity and Social Impact, Dr. Rogers helps develop and deploy DEI strategies that achieve more equitable outcomes both internally and across the organization’s portfolio of work, including helping institutions establish strategic action-oriented plans that drive inclusive change in their respective workplaces. To complement these plans, she hosts conversations series to help support employees and trains individual employees to help manage and continue to proactively drive inclusion strategies.

Dr. Rogers earned a bachelor’s degree in Integrative Arts from Penn State University – Altoona, a master’s degree in Higher Education and Student Affairs and a PhD in Higher Education with a focus on Race and Equity from Indiana University. She and seven other colleagues made institutional history at Indiana University as the largest group of Black women to graduate simultaneously in the School of Education. This group of women—deemed “The Great Eight”— gained national attention and was selected as honoree for the 2016 Ebony Magazine’s Power 100 list. In her free time, Dr. Rogers is a contributing writer for various online blogs, offering commentary on higher education and the Black woman’s experience.
